Day 1 - Kavak, Angel Falls
Depart Caracas on a flight south towards Venezuela's Region. After a brief stop in Puerto Ordaz, head south to Canaima National Park, over-flying the massive Auyan-tepui mesa. Weather permitting, you will have a bird's-eye view of Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall, cascading 3,212 feet into the jungle below. The falls were discovered in 1936 by Jimmy Angel, an eccentric American bush-pilot, who was exploring the area for mineral deposits, but ended up discovering one of the eight wonders of the world.
The plane will land at an airstrip in Kavak, where you are off on a pleasant 45 minute walk from this outpost, across grassy savannah and through thick rainforest, taking you to one of the narrowest canyons in the world. Over millions of years, a small river has carved a cavernous gorge where the sun shines only briefly. Guided by local Indians, you will wade and swim through the canyon to the hidden waterfall of Kavak. A small dugout canoe is towed to keep cameras dry and assist non-swimmers. You will have time to swim, take photographs and explore this lost paradise. After enjoying a grilled lunch, return to the plane and continue on to Caurama Camp.
Caurama Camp The camp is ideally situated in the transition zone between the flat grasslands and the hilly Amazonas rainforest. These two fascinating worlds come together to create a truly memorable experience for guests. Accommodations for the next three nights are in simple rooms with ceiling fans and private bathrooms. Day 2 and 3 - Caurama Camp
While staying at the camp, you will be able to explore several biological regions. The Caura forest reserve is home to approximately 400 different species of birds (see our Caurama Birdlist, numerous plants and trees such as acacias, cedars, mahogany and orchids. Close to the camp is the Rio Sipao, which flows through the protected Rio Caura Preserve. Here you will find abundant wildlife including toucans, fisher eagles and royal herons. You may also catch sight of capuchin and howler monkeys. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a number of excursions, including a hike to the Leona Rapids. Located in an area of primary-growth forest, the area has several small rapids and a natural spring, where you can take a jungle swim. At the Hacienda La Faltrisquera, located in a rocky rainforest valley, you can observe non-Asiatic buffaloes, tapirs and hundreds of macaws flying over head. Taking a boat trip up the Rio Caura, you will have the chance to visit a Makiritare Indian village, see pink river dolphins, river otters, kingfishers, turkey vultures and numerous other flora and fauna. Day 4 - Caracas
At the appropriate time, return overland on a private 3 to 4 hour transfer to Puerto Ordaz.
